The Abstract Self | 2021 | Metal | 80 x 68 x 22 cm | Unique Piece
“The Abstract Self” is a visual meditation on the human being’s inner journey a confrontation rendered through abstraction. In this work, Müge Kesim offers a silent yet potent narrative about the pursuit of selfhood.
At first glance, the form appears confined within a rigid frame yet upon closer inspection, it resists containment, spilling outward in a quiet rebellion. The frame becomes a metaphor for societal norms and external definitions of identity, while the flowing lines that defy it symbolize the soul’s instinctive urge to transcend, evolve, and reclaim its authentic shape.
There is a palpable rhythm to the sculpture’s contours at once trembling, flowing, and resisting. This movement reflects both the artist’s intimate dialogue with her own inner world and invites viewers to reflect on the fluid, ever-transforming nature of their own identities.
“The Abstract Self” is not an answer, but a question made tangible in form: Who am I, and when do I become truly myself?
